The latent pursuit of my art education began in the Fall of 2002 with classes in drawing, painting (water media primarily) and illustration. My preferred medium is transparent watercolor, but gouache (opaque watercolor), and acrylic are close seconds. Pastel is in a class of its own for me. Though I often incorporate this medium in some of my paintings, I don’t use my pastels often on a full work of art, only because it has to do with lack of physical space and convenience in which to work. During the process of my artistic endeavors, I have discovered that my style is Realism, and my preferred subject is, in general, the landscape, and in particular, the wonder of water and its reflections.
Living in the Sierra foothills where I’m able to hike many trails and visit many areas, provides me with abundant material for sketching and painting. I sketch and photograph my subjects as I would like to record them in a painting. It is important to me to capture what I’m seeing at that moment in time. During the actual production of a work, with the help of reference material, I’m able to recall my feelings and the perceptions I have of my subject. And, I thoroughly enjoy pursuing and producing every nuance and detail, retrieving the magic of the moment in the subject work.
